rawbeats.com short retrospective

6th Sept 2004

Seldom Records was created because three people who love music got fed up with being force-fed bland, pre-packaged pop groups by the record industry, and decided to do something about it.

The labels philosophy is simple: 'It's all about the music'.

Seldom Sampler 1

First up, a collection of 5 unreleased gems to whet the appetite of any music fan. The dreamy Future Song by Idiot Bear opens the set and is followed by the Babylon By Bus tune Away, a beautiful track, with a theme we can all relate to; the desire to be free of the pain, from a break up, loss or a disappointment.

A change of tone next, as The Endorphines drop Moon Man on us. Funky chopped us drums pull the listen through various melody changes and effects.

Redneck Renegade's Up in the Middle of Nowhere ups the tempo again, a very uplifting song which deserves a re-edit for the dancefloor. The sampler ends with UpC DownC, an instrumental journey through minimal drums and distorted guitar.

This sampler is a great taste of the Seldom catalogue thus far, have a peek at: www.seldomrecords.co.uk if your curiosity is aroused... reviews of some more Seldom treats follow below...

OK Junior - The Floating Formation EP

OK Junior will please fans of The Bees with their breezy melodies and soothing vocals. The Floating Formation EP has been championed on XFM and seen some press through NME, lets hope this is just the first dose from these guys.

Lastly, The Looming Moon are clearly on a different tip altogether and have created some lovely moments tucked away on this 3 track EP. Need to (Meditate) in particular deserves some airplay.
